Shock News: P&O Australia brand to be shut down. Replaced by Carnival Cruise Line.

Very sad news this morning with the announcement that P&O Australia will be shut down in 2025, with two of its three ships absorbed into Carnival Cruise Line to improve ‘operational efficiencies’. This effectively ends the lines centuries long connection with Australia and means that Australia will no longer have a home grown cruise line. Comments from Carnival: In a media statement, Carnival C...

I was on the ship 2 weeks ago. The hanging space in the wardrobe cupboard is ridiculously small and the type of coat hangers used is totally unsuitable. It's better to take your own wire coat hangers. The hanging rails are also too high so diminutive people will hardly be able to reach them. I spoke to many people in various grades of cabin who all said the wardrobes must have been designed by an idiot. A further relative point is that if you take less clothes and intend washing them, then consider where the laundry rooms are. They are in the mid-ship area and up to 2 deck levels above or below where your cabin is. Unless you want to sit in the laundry room for an hour or more it is too far to keep going back to your state room.

If I ever went to Europe this would have to be the way. Very expensive however. I'm terrified of flying though. Will only travel by car, train if necessary. Oh well, thats life staying on the ground. If god had meant people to fly he would have given us wings.

Nice story about Ancerville. She was a near sister of the Renaissance of Paquet Lines. Glad she is still Around. Hope she is in decent shape.!! About your bridge !! Don’t let them touch it. The sister bridge, Bayonne Bridge, is from my home town, Staten Island, in NY. They have RUINED it by raising the deck. It now sits in the middle of the arch and looks horrible. Tell them HANDS OFF. More boats on the Harbour each year for the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The opening of the Opera House, and the RAAF display in the '80's also saw boats than are shown in your video.

Thank you Chris for the video. I was fortunate enough to sail with Norwegian Capricorn Line on a very unique itinerary round trip from Sydney to Tasmania. I believe it had never been done before nor repeated since by a 'large' cruise ship. We spent a day at anchor in Port Davey, returned to Hobart via the d'Entrecasteaux channel and then spent another day at anchor off Coles Bay. I also cruised on another ship that Sarina Bratton was involved with - Cunard Crown Monarch - Sydney to Cairns via Noumea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. How I miss the smaller ships with interesting local itineraries. I'm sure there would be a market for them.

Great video Chris. I had forgotten about Norweigan Capricorn line. Other failed Australian ventures would be of interest. One that springs to mind is the Blue Funnel line's Princess Mahsuri. The Princess Mahsuri was a small luxury ship that sailed out of Sydney between around 1982 - 85. I actually got to go on her when she was visiting Hobart, and I remember she had capacity for around 330 passengers. She was a very nice ship, quite luxurious compared to say, the Oriana. I believe the Princess Mahsuri is still sailing today under another name.

Thank you Chris I never sailed on Norwegian Capricorn or new about the ship, I have sailed on P&O Oriana Fair Star . I listened to someone else and he reported Australia has the most expensive port charges and few other thins that make it hard for P&O to make a profit. Same reason the ferry Melbourne to Tasmania left Melbourne to Geelong to expensive .

My parents always went cruising on Sitmar Cruises. It was so much fun to go on board to attend their bon voyage parties in their inside cabins at the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach. I remember how low the hung ceiling in their room was and it was metal with small air holes. In the 1970’s, those were the days!

Went on Pacific Explorer June 2023 and what a tired old ship it is, the only thing holding the rust together was the paint. Cabins were tired, old and dated. Food was below average and what you got in the buffet is what the crew also got in the crew mess, maybe they got better food than the passengers. Just awful food overall. I guess a 20 plus year old ship is only what you could expect. I have also been on the SS Himayala, Fairstar(Sitmar), SS Acrcadia too back in the day too.

P&O first made there wealth moving opium tea spice and gold in which created the opium war in china. I first sailed on the SS Cathay in 1975 as a 12 year old 7 weeks through Asia. And spent my life on the sea Navy and working for P&O on oil rigs a great job. Cruising on 2 in the past not impressed so many fuck ups. Princess great.

P&O has been ruthlessly dismembered over the last 20 years. I'm sure we've got greed behind that. You have to wonder about the dim-witted thinking behind this decision.
